Travelling can be stressful at any given time, but travelling over the Christmas period gets a little dicey and a lot annoying. Whether it is long queues to get past security or unexpected delays, the heart-warming feeling of Christmas can easily be overshadowed by soul-sucking, happiness draining travel.
To save your sanity, I’ve compiled a list of my favourite tips for a less stressful travel experience.
Safe travels everyone!
Get organized
This is very essential especially if you are as forgetful as I can be. I’ve also learned to bring backup of everything, that’s why I have three iPhone chargers. After forgetting essential items many times, I make it a point to write an extensive list of holiday items and start ticking them off one by one. I even have a separate list for my handbag to avoid the risk of forgetting my headphones (oh the horror!)
Pack your hand luggage with these essentials
Just like I said above, it will benefit you to prepare ahead of time with all these essentials at hand:
Snacks (I’m always peckish)
Book/magazines
iPad/Tablet/Laptop
iPhone charger (have extras in your suitcase)
headphones (have a spare one as well)
Toiletries (Body spray, perfume, cream, mini toothbrush/paste, face wipes, lip balm etc)
Cosy socks (wearing shoes on the plane makes me uncomfortable)
Bonus Tip: be sure to download movies and music before you must succumb to airport Wi-Fi or waste all your data.
Get Caffeinated
I cannot express how important it is to be alert especially if you have an early flight. I stay alert for several reasons, fear of falling asleep and missing my flight, caffeine also helps me deal with annoying travellers or screaming kids.
Have enough time
There is nothing more stressful as the feeling of missing your flight or coach. The anxiety that rises inside of you when you’re still stuck on the train and check-in for your flight to Dubai is closing in 30mins (yes this happened to me and I panicked like crazy).
What makes not having enough time even worse is that during the busiest time of the year to travel, EVERYONE is stressed out and acting crazy.
Schedule time to rest
Travelling always drains you, even if it’s the easiest travel experience you have ever had. However, it’s December so I doubt this will be the case. What I like to do when I get to my destination is find some alone time within the first 24 hours to zone out in front of Netflix or read an enjoyable book till I fall asleep.
Even though I’m visiting family, I don’t feel guilty about this, nor should you! WE DESERVE THIS!
